Reading

Kindergarten is all about learning to read! In kindergarten we really work on sight words and decoding strategies.

Here are a few of the tools we use to help your child learn to decode:

Eagle Eye

Look at the picture for clues.

Lips the Fish

Say the first sounds of the new word.

Stretchy Snake

Stretch the word out slowly.

Put the sounds together.

Chunky Monkey

Look for a chunk that you know (at in cat)

Look for a word part (-ing, -er)

Sight words are also a key component in helping students learn to read. Sight words make up more than 50% of everyday reading material! Here is a link to the Dolch sight words.
